GALS will consider your application if you identify as female or are gender nonconforming. We especially encourage you to apply if you are a student of color, if you are from a low socioeconomic background, or if you identify with other groups underrepresented in fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
You will be selected to participate in GALS based on your motivation, interest for science, and team spirit, as expressed in your written application. No previous backpacking experience is necessary, and your school grades are not a determining factor. Preference is given to those who have not had previous opportunities similar to GALS. Though 
preference is given to residents from the state where each individual program is offered, anyone can apply as long as you can provide your own transportation to/from the meeting location. Gas reimbursement can be provided, if needed.
GALS is committed to being as inclusive as possible. Anyone in 9th-12th grade who is able to hike while carrying a heavy (30 lb) backpack is encouraged to APPLY.
